1 lecture room and 2 Bioinformatics
laboratory
The
Bioinformatics laboratory – A Step Towards Green Computing
Servers
and workstations housed in this Laboratory, have 25 terminals. As the
department added more computers and servers to extend its
computational facilities, it would be noted that the power
consumption would also increase rapidly along with the amount of heat
liberated. So to take a care of reducing the power consumption
without jeopardizing the computational capability – we have
introduced:
TFT
monitors – The TFT monitors consumes much less power than the
conventional CRT monitors which usually have a power rating of ~ 60
watts and do not almost heat up as compared to the CRTs.
Protos
boxes from Wipro (with 40 GB HDD, 4 USB ports, Geode processors from
AMD) with a very small form factor(saving space), low on power
consumption (~ 12 watts) and almost does not heat up.
To
minimize the use of monitors, most of the servers are connected a
single Monitor through a KVM switch.

Infrastructure Facility(BIF) Center, WBUT
Bioinformatics
Infrastructure Facility (BIF) Center established by the Department of
Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, under its BTISnet program,
is associated with the Department of Bioinformatics, WBUT. The Center
regularly receives grants of rupees fifteen to twenty lakhs from DBT,
for the purpose of “Establishment of Bioinformatics Infrastructure
Facility (BIF) for the promotion of Biology Teaching through
Bioinformatics (BTBI)”.
Prof.
Sabyasachi SenGupta, Vice-Chancellor, WBUT,
is the Chairperson
of the BIF Center, Dr. Raja
Banerjee
is the Coordinator
and Dr. S. Supakar
is the Co-coordinator
of the BIF Center.
Besides
helping in the regular departmental curriculum, the
Center regularly organizes workshops, training and seminars. Eminent
Scientists from different research institutions, Universities, R&D
organizations from all over the country deliver seminars on current
research topics.
